Not even a month after eight students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) created an uproar due to sexual harassment by their professor, another professor of School of Social Sciences at the university has been booked for allegedly sexually harassing and threatening a female scholar.
The accused professor was also a part of Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) in 2014 as convener.
According to the police complaint filed by the student, the Ph.D scholar has alleged that she was molested, sexually harassed and threatened by her professor in School of Social Sciences.
The case has been registered under sections 354, 506, and 509 of IPC. The complaint was received on Friday by Delhi Police and a case was registered the same day.
President of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union has said that this is the latest sexual harassment case surfacing from within the campus and that the Union will help the student as and when she will approach them. She has not yet asked for any help from student-led Gender Sensitisation Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH).
Demanding action against the professor, Saurabh Sharma, ABVP leader and former joint secretary of JNUSU said, “The professor in question has been a part of a Group of Adult Education. He should be immediately arrested and asked to resign from all the administrative positions.”
The complaint comes within a month of similar allegations against professor Atul Johri, of the School of Life Sciences, who was arrested on charges of sexual harassment leveled against him by eight female students.
The professor’s lawyer has claimed that his client is being framed as part of a political conspiracy. Johri was arrested and was later released on bail on the same day last month.
