The Egmore Metropolitan Court on Monday issued summons against Bhartiya Janata Party leader S Ve Shekhar for derogatory social media posts against women journalists.
Actor, BJP leader and former MLA, S Ve Shekar has been directed to appear in the court on June 20.
The court issued summon after Chennai city police’s cyber crime wing filed an 18- page chargesheet against the leader who apprehended arrest in connection with this criminal case.
The police also recorded the statement of seven journalists which in the chargesheet has been presented as witness statements.
Earlier, the SC had refused to grant the actor anticipatory bail to the leader.
The apex court directed him to approach the local court as police had to file chargesheet in the case.
A bench of Justices L Nageshwara Rao and MM Shantanagoudar had observed that once the chargesheet is filed in a case, the accused can seek for a regular bail and not anticipatory bail.
Earlier, the Madras High Court had rejected anticipatory bail plea for the actor and criticised the police for their inaction and directed them to take action on the complaint.
On April 19, Shekar drew flak for sharing a derogatory post on his Facebook page. The post said that women journalists’ sleep around to climb up the professional ladder.
This came after a woman journalist accused the Governor of Tamil Nadu, Banwarilal Purohit, of inappropriate behaviour.
The journalist had lodged a complaint against the actor with the Crime Branch on April 20.
