DMK chief M Karunanidhi was shifted to Kauvery Hospital in Chennai after his health deteriorated late on Friday night.
On a day when DMK leaders maintained that Karunanidhi was doing fine and has shown improvement after doctors gave him continuous treatment, the scene completely changed post-midnight.
After issuing a statement that Karunanidhi’s health is improving, DMK working president and son M K Stalin, elder son M K Azhagiri and senior DMK leaders left the Gopalapuram residence around 10.30 pm.
Within two hours, all of them started trickling in one by one fuelling speculation.
Sources said the decision to shift him to the hospital was taken by the team of doctors who are attending to him after his health showed signs of deterioration. Around 1.30 am, Karunanidhi was moved to Kauvery Hospital, located a few kilometres away from his Gopalapuram residence, and was accompanied by family members.
The developments come a day after Kauvery Hospital said that the health of Karunanidhi has witnessed a “slight decline” due to urinary tract infection.
The hospital bulletin on Thursday night led to a flurry of activity at the Gopalapuram residence of Karunanidhi which saw a steady stream of visitors. Hundreds of cadre from across Tamil Nadu also thronged the area eager to know about their leader’s health. President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee (West Bengal), N Chandrababu Naidu (Andhra Pradesh) and H D Kumaraswamy (Karnataka) spoke to Stalin to enquire about Karunanidhi’s health. Karunanidhi has been confined to his home since October 2016 due to age-related illness, except for his hospital visits every six months.
