In a dramatic turn of events, Mumbai Indians managed to beat Kings XI Punjab by 3 runs in Mumbai on Wednesday, 16 May and still remain in the running for play-offs. Chasing 184, Punjab looked poised to get to the target riding on KL Rahul’s fabulous knock of 94, till in the last couple of overs when the MI bowling unit led by Jasprit Bumrah completely turned it around.
This win propels Mumbai’s chances into the play-offs as they sit at the third place in the points table with 12 points having played 13 matches.
Chasing 187, openers Lokesh Rahul (94) and Chris Gayle (18) provided a steady start, scoring 34 runs in four overs.
But Gayle was departed in the same over by pacer Mitchell McClenaghan.
Aaron Finch (46) and Rahul then forged a crucial 111-run partnership. The duo slammed Punjab bowlers all around the park, but just when things seemed good in the middle, Finch was dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah in the 17th over.
While trying to match the increasing run rate, in-form Rahul was also dismissed by Bumrah in the 19th over. This was Rahul’s sixth half century of the season
Middle-order batsmen Axar Patel (10 not out), Yuvraj Singh (1) and Manoj Tiwary (4 not out) tried to reach the target but failed.
Earlier in the innings, Pollard rescued Mumbai from an imminent downfall by scoring a defiant 50 off 23 balls just when Andrew Tye (4/16) struck terror into the Mumbai’s batting line-up. With aid from Krunal Pandya the duo managed a quick-fire 65 run stand, that proved to be a crucial difference between the two teams.
The loss complicates chances for the Kings who too have 12 points from 13 games but with a terrible Net Run-rate of -0.490.
