Five Killed in Torrential Tunisia Rains

Flash floods in Tunisia’s Cap Bon peninsula have killed at least five people, authorities said on Sunday, 23 September, as surging waters caused by heavy rains carried away homes, cars and chunks of road.

Saturday’s storm caused water levels in some areas to rise as much as 1.7 metres (5.6 feet), as bridges and roads were damaged in record rains that dropped the equivalent of nearly six months of average precipitation.

Schools Remain Closed in 8 Districts in HP Due to Heavy Rainfall

Schools in eight districts of Himachal Pradesh, which include Kullu, Kinnaur, Chamba, Kangra, Bilaspur, Sirmaur, Mandi and Shimla will remain closed till 24 September, due to predictions of heavy rainfall, ANI reported.

Additionally, 19 people were airlifted by Army helicopter from the flood-hit Dobhi-Fojal area on Sunday, 23 September.

Former Mayor of Muzaffarpur District Shot Dead

Samir Kumar, the former mayor of Muzaffarpur district and his driver were both shot dead by unidentified assailants near Banaras Bank Chowk, ANI reported.

According to the police, they recovered 6 cartridges from the spot. They also said that it seemed like 17-18 rounds were fired, ANI reported.

Infiltration Bid Foiled in Kupwara, 2 Terrorists Killed

An infiltration bid was foiled in Tangdhar sector in Kupwara on Sunday, 23 September. Two terrorists have been killed. Operations are still in progress, ANI reported.

Normal life disrupted following heavy rainfall and flash flood in Kullu region in Himachal Pradesh, ANI reported.

Opposition DMK Sunday announced it would stage state-wide protests against the ruling AIADMK on corruption, in a bid to counter the arch rival’s move against it on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

The AIADMK has announced state-wide public meetings on September 25 seeking ‘trial’ of DMK and Congress for “war crimes” against Tamils in the 2009 Sri Lankan civil conflict.

DMK Propaganda Secretaries Trichy Siva and A Raja said the meetings, titled “Commission-Collection-Corruption”, will be held on 3 and 4 October.


Pirates Kidnap 12 Crew from Swiss Ship off Nigeria

A gang of pirates took hostage 12 crew members of a Swiss cargo ship they attacked in Nigerian waters on Saturday, the vessel’s operator has said.

Massoel Shipping said its bulk carrier MV Glarus, with 19 crew, came under attack early Saturday morning as it transported bulk wheat from Nigeria’s commercial capital Lagos to the southern oil hub of Port Harcourt.

Araku MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and former Araku MLA Siveri Soma shot dead by Naxals in Dumbriguda Mandal, Andra Paradesh, ANI reported.

Following the attack, security was tightened along the borders of Odisha, ANI added. Border Security Force, Special Operations Group , and other state forces put on alert.
